comment Is my system able to run 64-bit OS?
You'd be surprised at how many 32-bit CPUs are still in use, especially with GNU/Linux (as the resource requirements are still pretty low). Last time I went (just a couple months ago) and upgraded all my system software, I found that I had no remaining 64-bit systems at home (I've had some in the past, but they've all died). All I have left are 32-bit CPUs...

"It depends". See my comment on P.-H. Lin's answer.

comment Updating the BIOS before installing Ubuntu
It is true that a BIOS flash can go so horribly wrong that it's unrecoverable on common desktop boards. Since, if you can't boot, you can't run the flash utility. Some server boards have management processors that can flash the BIOS from specially prepared USB devices though. Other systems have dual BIOS for easy rollback. Even on single BIOS machines, the risk is minimal. It is recommended to have the machine on UPS/battery backup though as that's the highest source of risk during a BIOS flash.

comment How do I patch/workaround SSLv3 POODLE vulnerability (CVE-2014-3566)?
Definitely get rid of RC4 from this list, that's not safe. Stay with the remaining if you can. 3DES is weak, but I've turned that on in one particular place for compatibility. I hate to do it since it's weak, but at least it's not actually broken...

Broadcomm driver does not work on my S10-3. Mine appears to require the Atheros driver. Must be a lot of versions of the S10-3 as I see Lenovo has 3 different brands of wifi drivers available!

You're not alone, I'm fighting the same issue. Ideapad S10-3 claims the wireless is working fine, but it refuses to see any networks.
