Yes, I'm an idiot. Clearly.

Happy to report that I'm up and running now. The issue was related explicitly to google chrome. I uninstalled, blasted the google chrome folder in .config and reinstalled chrome. All good now.

Well, it seems I've been chasing down the wrong tree when it comes to the sound. I'm a web dev and I use Chrome for just about everything. When I fire up Firefox and make some noise, it plays just fine. Why I hadn't thought of trying this up to now I have no idea. So, seems the real issue is that I get no sound on Chrome in xubuntu. This is less of an issue, so I'll do some research there, but I think the majority of my media I can make due with firefox for :) Thanks for your help UNIm95

Ah ha, now we're getting somewhere. Yes, booting into a live xubuntu session the sound works as expected, maybe I just need to do a fresh install? Would love to fix if possible but wiping and restarting is an option if it's the only one I have.

Updated OP with image of my user settings. It was initially unchecked, so I checked it, rebooted, and still no sound. Tried to enable and disable multiple times with reboots between and still just silence from my speakers :). Don't know why or how it was unchecked to begin with but checking it doesn't seem to have changed anything. Thank you for your patience with me!

I've updated the OP with a new picture, this one of my Output Tab. Again, HDMI has been disabled.

Ok, I've switched off the HDMI audio, still not working, but I do really appreciate your help. That's the only change I made, and I have Analog Stereo Duplex selected for the other profile.

Thanks for your comment, I've edited the OP to include a picture of my configuration tab. Going to go try your suggestions now. Will post back shortly.

@Serg it was an installation from a usb drive. Live usb of vanilla ubuntu has sound working fine. Even if I boot up a virtual machine inside my xubuntu install the sound works fine from windows...just seems to be the xubuntu install that doesn't work with the sound.

@DuncanWielk I've added the output, but not sure what you mean by "set your configuration right under the configuration tab"? What configuration tab are you referring to? I'm not quite sure what my configuration should be? Thank you so much for the comment, I really appreciate you taking a look.

@DuncanWielk will follow up right now with that output. To answer Serg it seems to only be in xubuntu. When I load a virtual machine with windows, sounds works perfectly from windows. When I load up a live usb of vanilla ubuntu, sounds works fine. So it seems to only be xubuntu.
