comment how long should it take to create a raid 10 with 4 3TB disks?
No. RAID 10 is correct. The number after RAID does not indicate the number of drives used, but how they are used. With 4 large drives using RAID 10 is a sane choice. (For more details on RAID and a long explanation see this post on our sister site: serverfault.com/questions/339128/… )

Could you add a bit more information? As it stands it is almost a link-only answer and that link might become invalid at any time.

comment Wireless 4311 card not working
Could you add a bit more information as to why it works (E.g. "The default 44 driver is not compatible. Get the older 4.3 driver. You do that with these commands"). Even if you do that by partially copying or translating the information on the other site you linked to (which might not be available in the future).

comment Format partition to what block size for photos only
Not quite. I am saying that you can format a filesystem on a partition to use a large blocksize, and that that might be a bit faster. But you can not format the (raw) sectors on the disk. And the fdisk listing is about those sectors.

comment Format partition to what block size for photos only
Old tests on windows (should be more or less the same for Ubuntu) showed that larger cluster sizes (filesystem block size on Ubuntu) speeds up large serial reads. it also has downsized such as wasting space.

comment Format partition to what block size for photos only
fdisk returns the physical sector size that the disk reports. Not the filesystem block size.
