comment Why does my cpu's clockspeed keep dropping?
I place a fan outside vent to blow large amounts of air toward the processor. I've been watching videos, running multiple applications at once, running virtual box at the same time. My processor speed doesn't drop. I think you were correct.

@Dillmo this is an old notebook with lots of problems, I keep it plugged in 24/7 since the battery has less than a planck second of battery life. However, it's been running at optimal processing speed nearly a year under ubuntu before the clock speed started to drop, I think it may have something to do with it over heating, as I tweaked the videocards speed using rovclock (it should be producing more heat).

@K7AAY It never occurred to me that it could be a hardware problem. Is there any way for me to verify that this is the cause?

comment Is there a way to move files between guest and host in virtualbox?
Were you able to get a solution for Windows XP guest? The solutions on this page are for windows 7, the interface is just different enough on Windows XP that I'm not getting any luck. The original question specified Windows XP.

I posted the new question here and hopefully I can get the partition tables fixed and return to this problem.

I then booted from my thumbdrive and ran sudo gparted to make sure my files were still in order. Nope. I got this message Invalid partition table on /dev/sda -- wrong signature 5208. On gparted the drive shows up as 2 tb unpartitioned with a red error marker next to it. This is where I am now

I am going to start a new question since my problem has deviated so far from the initial symptoms. After trying mount -o remount, rw / and using the recommended dpkg --configure -a in the maintenance shell, it seem to continue upgrading where it left off (it made it passed where it was stuck on prior attempts). However, it seems to have aborted due to too many errors. I then restarted the system and it booted fine (I was happy at that point). I opened up a terminal and ran sudo apt-get install and while doing its thing the whole system froze. I restarted and it wouldnt boot from thedrive

this question was migrated to askubuntu recently. It sounds like the problem I am having now (little flaky on the details on how the person got to this point). The problems are identical starting from the freezing and restart. I'll give the solution a try and get back with the results.

Thanks, excellent timing, I was just about to start messing around with it not knowing what I was doing. Hitting <kbd>ctrl+c</kbd> failed to close the update manager. Do you by chance know what the process name is?

comment Flash Plugin not working properly in lubuntu 13.04
Odd, I went to check on my settings using those the instructions I linked to and it seems that I actually have it checked off and the colours are just fine. It was a different computer that I had a problem on that may have had an nvidia graphics card. The one I'm using has an old ATI card. Let me know if that fixed your problem and whether you have an nvidia card or not.

I kind of remember have this same issue back in 10.04 (an age ago). The trick for me was to disable the "enable hardware acceleration" option under flash's settings. See this answer for instructions how. I'll post it as a answer in a bit, just want to look into it more before I do.

comment How to recover apt-get that was deleted by me?
Sorry, you're correct, Synaptic is the front end for apt, it depends on apt. The same is true for Software Center.

comment Won't read or play CD/DVD?
Is this an internal or external dvd-drive? I had a similar issue with an external drive and it turned out that it wasn't getting enough power because of a usb hub I was using. It would detect since it was connected, but not function because of the lack of power.

comment Is there any driver available for Radeon XPRESS 200(M)?
I don't know if this is still any issue for you, but in my notebook I have Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics card, the next in line successor to your graphics card. AMD's proprietary drivers aren't compatible with current versions of x.org (anything you'd find in any of the supported versions of Ubuntu) and AMD has announced that they will no long provide updates for Linux drivers on these legacy cards (they did so quite some time ago). However, using the open source drivers, I'm able to run World of Warcraft quite, so they aren't bad.

you might want to refer to the AppDB page for this game. There are a number of different versions with multiple ratings, but they include various fixes for running the game.

comment How to install Ubuntu on a very old PC
A defective motherboard on the acer 5100 series notebooks made it so that the dvd drive and harddrive on my laptop are no longer working. However, using a spare external usb harddrive and usb dvd rom drive, I have been able to run Ubuntu with no bugs. I now use my old laptop as a desktop. What he wants to do is quite possible and has been done before. In my case, I, in addition to a lack of cd/dvd drive, lacked an internal hard drive and even managed to do it.
