comment 13.04 no context menu after rabbitvcs install
No need to logout after applying the changes; killall nautilus does the trick.

comment SSH connections dropping after two or so lines
Can you obtain their client logs? The ones attached just show a normal exit - or is that actually the error case?

To clarify, this is not a duplicate question, since the OP's problem is the opposite of that in the proposed duplicate.

comment http_proxy variable
Since the OP isn't behind a proxy, they only need to ensure that they do not configure a proxy server. However it's certainly worth making the point that, should one need to configure a proxy, apt needs to be handled separately due to sudo's default configuration.

comment Looking for a better solution to execute a single sudo command when using a normal user account?
Yes, you should really either enable sudo for your account (and limit it to the command(s) you occasionally require), or continue to put up with the dual login, or enable the root account. The most advisable, as far as I'm concerned, would be one of the first two.

comment What if NO update, security or otherwise is ever installed?
There are many more details to go into; what perimeter security is in place, which web stack you're using, etc, but this isn't really an appropriate forum for that. Based on what you've told us, his attitude is unacceptable, and you should be highly concerned. The fact that he's new to nix only makes it worse, since he's less likely to configure everything securely.

I did mean to post a link to the FSSTND ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/fsstnd/old/fsstnd-1.1/fsstnd-1.1.txt - but your link is rather more succinct, digestible, and up-to-date!
