comment Trying to install Ubuntu 13.10
Are you trying to do a fresh install on clean empty disk(s), or are you installing to a used disk? Are you installing to a disk with another o/s such as MS Windows already on it, or are there several partitions for any other reason? And is it a standard SATA disk or a SCSI or a RAID array?

comment how to create iso image from DVD
Mitch's comment using the terminal is also good in the case of trying to copy a home-made DVD which has invalid characters in the file name or title. I recently couldn't get Brasero to make an ISO of a DVD with slashes in the name (the DIY idiot used slashes to date the title - probably worked in Windows!). But at the terminal I could specify a new name and it all worked ok.

comment Can I install an Ubuntu app from remote laptop?
Hi VoidCode. If you're trying to have a package installed on a non-tech's computer I would just install it yourself at another ssh window, and that way the end user has no interaction with the installation process at all. When you're logged in via ssh, just change to the folder with the .deb file in, then type:sudo dpkg -i package.deb

comment Unable to see GUI
In your Ubuntu VM I would type lspci at the command prompt and see whether the audio device shows up in the list. If not, you maybe need to check the settings on the VMWare host to see whether the audio device is enabled etc.

comment horizontal line across screen at startup
Hi Debbie. I am glad it worked, because I know that nVidia can be quite hard work at times, and your hardware will be different from mine. So if you're happy, then I'm happy! Maybe you could mark my answer as "useful"? Cheers
