"Not enabled by default" does not mean broken, and no "heroic effort" is needed: just modprobe pcsprk (in console) or pactl upload-sample ... in X11 and the annoying beep is back :)

@YanickRochon: Same error here, both when trying device as /dev/sdd (the USB drive itself) or /dev/sdd1 (its first partition).

Also, you may call him a cousin of gnome-terminal, after all they both serve the same purpose. A cousin that does not depend on any graphical environment, and is connected to a device that that grants him somewhat more powers.

Do not fear the Linux Console: He is a very powerful yet tamed Dragon, and he is your best friend when compiz crashes ;)
