comment <?php phpinfo();?> test does not work
Meh. What does sudo apache2ctl -M | grep php give ya? Trying to find out if php5_module was loaded. My suspicion: apache2ctl -M won't list php5_module. I think the tutorial is bogus. If php5_module wasn't installed automatically, it can't work. See this tutorial, where they install it: digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/…

comment <?php phpinfo();?> test does not work
Not sure if this tutorial is correct. I don't see mod_php in there. Do you have libapache2-mod-php5 installed? Have you restarted Apache after installing php? Or reloaded: sudo service apache2 reload?

comment Help - Stuck in Firefox and can't do anything
Well this is very little information to work with. Have you re-installed Ubuntu? That would be probably the easiest thing to get rid of all those "anti-tamper" settings, whithout knowing what they are.

comment Fortran compiler .exe
I think he doesn't even want a decompiler or the code at all. Sounds to me like he wants to call the first binary to do it's calculation and use the output. If he want's to do that from Fortran, that's a question for StackOverflow. With the shell it would simply be ./exe1 params | exe2, if exe1 writes to stdout and exe2 reads from it

comment Video chat software between 4 stations?
Does it need to work without a server/an internet connection (e.g., a local network yes, but no connection to the public internet)

comment How to select text from random position to the first or last character in gedit?
what do you mean by random position, the cursor position or truly random? Also, what do you mean by first/last character. Of the word, the line, the document?

comment 14.10: VirtualBox “No suitable module for running kernel found”, Cannot Find Kernel Source
Well, do you have the same issue at all? Have you done everything that OP has done? Is the service running, i.e. sudo service virtualbox status ? Have you tried rebuilding the module with sudo dkms autoinstall ?

comment Use apt-get to install packages newer than Ubuntu release
Right, I guess that might be an issue for some of the scientific python packages (so I've heard). Then maybe the second option. Although it looks like python-pandas has a lot of dependencies.

comment JDK 8 Installation for Ubuntu 14.04 (Android Studio & NetBeans)
Take a look at this answer: askubuntu.com/a/55960/44179 If that doesn't help (especially update-alternatives), delete your jdk8 installation and install it using this PPA: webupd8.org/2012/09/… Unless you only need Java 7, then the easiest solution would be to simply install OpenJDK7 from the repository...

Is there are reason why you're not using the version from the repository? Worked for me out of the box.

comment When would my application need to run with privileges?
I'm curious as to why my answer was downvoted. It's the standard way to deal with this on Unix. Permissions are tied to users and groups. Run your process with the least privileged user possible, if you need privileges drop them ASAP. Most excellent writeup at serverfault: serverfault.com/questions/357108/…

comment When would my application need to run with privileges?
I think this answer doesn't give sound advice. It's basically "run in your home dir for safety". But it depends on the user the process is running as and if you want a proper deployment, i.e., a server, then giving internet users access to your homedir is not optimal. Access permissions for servers have been discussed at length and there is an excellent canonical answer at serverfault: serverfault.com/questions/357108/…

comment When would my application need to run with privileges?
Bc. my answer got heavily downvoted, some questions to clarify. (1) You tagged with "user-mode-linux" Do you mean the virtualization technique, that runs linux kernels in userspace (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User-mode_Linux)? Bc. That's what the tag is refering to. (2) How do you deploy your web app. Do you run it in an application server, or webserver like Apache or is it standalone? (3) will you deploy in a productive environment, or respectively develop for that (e.g., writing a daemon with init-script etc.), or just for fun?

Oh, yes totally. Bc. gstreamer might want to use HW acceleration and VMs sometimes do funny things. Also, there seem to be some issues with VMware: communities.vmware.com/message/2330200 But I can't say much about this and can't test it now. I usually use Virtualbox

OK, this is possibly a bug. Could you install gnome-media then run gstreamer-properties and on the Video tab, click "Test" for Video Output. What do you see? You may try to set the output to "XWindow System (no XV)" and see if the green screen disappears.

Mh, according to gstreamer.freedesktop.org/documentation/plugins.html , that should have been it. Could type dpkg -l | grep gstreamer into a terminal and post the output to some kind of pastebin, e.g., paste.ubuntu.com

comment Good starting point for Learning all about Ubuntu?
Is that so? I've not done it myself (I have got almost 10 years of Linux experience), but many of the comments say that it is very easy. Almost for people who have little experience with computers in general. Like there is a chapter on how to change your desktop wallpaper...
