comment How to Drop-In replace MySQL with MariaDB?
Weird, in my playground DO droplet it didn't ask for me, but my production VPS just asked me.

Also, to mention official site of MariaDB has newer versions available for installation as repositories or debs. Ubuntu repos currently give me v5.5, but mariadb repos give me v10.1, which has quite a bit differences.

It didn't ask for me an option to delete any databases, also used my old my.cnf as base configuration. This was one of the smoothest upgrades I've done so far.

Note: ping 8.8.8.8 -c3 pings only 3 times, you don't need to Ctrl+C then. You may use any number in the parameter, like -c5 , -c1 , -c100 etc.

comment Ubuntu 14.04 PHPMyAdmin can't find mcrypt extension
Same here. Maybe during the time I've tried the first solution worked, and later they changed something during updated and now the solution that you've accepted works, I really have no idea. I'll try to make a fresh installation soon, and if it changes I'll let you know.

Just for a heads-up, I've installed Apache and PHP using sudo tasksel install lamp-server.

Weird, have you got any errors during these steps ? I'm using exactly this way, and I don't have the issue anymore.
