I hope my edits clarify things. Do you think this question is more suitable for SuperUser?

From the plain text. I never meant to parse the HTML source. Simply copy+paste from the browser window, so no encoding issues. Utility input: the plain output of tree command. If there is no such utility, then the answer to my question is 'no'.

I am not entirely sure what you mean. Both of the examples I linked and yours seem to bare the same formatting as the output of the tree command, except for the dot in the first line of one of them. If I paste them as plain-text in an editor, then I cannot distinguish between them and the output of tree that came from my console. I was just wondering if there was a tool to parse the structure and reproduce the hierarchy.

Something like this tree or this blog post, which details the commands for the creation of the tree, but it is not always the case. I can also think of a case where I filter an existing directory structure using tree and want to replicate the result.
