@muru nevermind, problem was other computer was Mac and they don't write to NTFS.

@muru doesn't really solve the issue. changing the mount options only affects it on this computer (on which I already have write permissions), once I mount it on a different computer it's back to read-only.

Not anymore: askubuntu.com/questions/256986/… -- because convergence. By far the dumbest decision anyone has ever made... actually merging a commit that removes functioning code for a useful feature, because it's not as useful on some device that doesn't exist yet.
