cron does run as root, right? You can try adding root to the mail group, but it shouldn't be required. usermod -a -G mail root

@Vorac use pvaucontrol. Not seeing a new device is normal, as a loopback is neither a sink nor a source. Also note that when you have multiple sources or sinks, you need to specifiy those. It's all documented here
