I am a freelance computer programmer and system administrator hanging out in several Linux User Groups in and near Berlin, mostly LinuxWorks! and Nerd-Cafe. My jobs involve working for the Free Software Foundation Europe and for several places involved with the education of children.

On the side I have been involved in short movie projects and I am coauthoring a german language video podcast about GNU/Linux and Free Software. Watch the podcast on http://gnufunzt.de.

On stackexchange I have been most active on askubuntu.com, though I am really a Debian user and a stick-in-the-mud proponent of old-school Unix philosphy.

I started programming at a rather young age, and I am a strong advocate for Free Software.

The wine documentation says otherwise.

"no devices detected" surely is a hard one. You're not by chance using some really exotic drive setup (cheap HW-RAID-Controllers, ancient HDDs with <1GB, ...)? What is the content of your /proc/partitions file? Thumbs up for your persistance btw.

@gh403: I actually hope that naveen will rephrase the question, since NAT traversal is way beyond the scope of this thread.

comment How to install MySQL 5.6?
Well so they install in /opt ... Since "the Debian way" is actually just about being a lazy administrator I would live with it and adjust the startup files in /etc/init.d accordingly. Maybe there are even some ready to symlink startup files in /opt.

Oh and also: If you see any proprietary software doing this, then rest assured that this proprietary software is using a proprietary internet service to function. A STUN gateway at best, a router, able to listen in to your traffic at worst (I'm not saying "they" are after you, just that "they" had an easyer job if they were ;-). In any case this makes you even more dependent on the proprietor. The problem is fundamental with Internet-Routing.

comment Why is the Amazon and Ubuntu One Music webapp part of common? Can it be removed without removing all others?
Or maybe you can switch off treating recommendations as dependencies in the software center. This would definately be easyer. I can't help you find this option though.

There is probably some package recommending common without really depending on it. Try the terminal program apt-get for managing your software: Open a terminal and type sudo apt-get install common- gmail+ docs+. This defines what you want to keep and what to remove in one run. Well actually I am not sure that these are the actual package names (I don't use Ubuntu myself). Maybe someone else can give a hint on that. Close the software center and all other package managers befor running apt-get.

comment How can I map layout switching on caps lock and swap caps with escape simultaneously with xkb?
BTW, I use xmodmap to get german umlauts with my us layout. I defined 'AltGr' as Mode_switch and i.e. keycode 38 = a A adiaeresis Adiaeresis for typing ä using AltGr + a. For writing cyrillic this could be a bit straining though.

comment Run application on local machine and show GUI on remote display
You were mixing it up. Wait... at least one of you did. Install screen on your desktop computer, use your notebook to ssh -X to your desktop, start screen in the ssh session, detach it and leave the session running. Then reattach the screen session with hands on your desktop computer and run something. This is similiar to my "SSH with a twist" answer. Using screen makes it a bit more conveniant.

General Hint: The first program you may want to start on your remote display is an application starter. I.e. lxpanel or something. This savel a lot of command line work.

As for your original question, why Amazon et. al. is included in commons in the first place... Thats probably because Ubuntu is turning evil or something. (SCNR ;-)
