I am a freelance computer programmer and system administrator hanging out in several Linux User Groups in and near Berlin, mostly LinuxWorks! and Nerd-Cafe. My jobs involve working for the Free Software Foundation Europe and for several places involved with the education of children.

On the side I have been involved in short movie projects and I am coauthoring a german language video podcast about GNU/Linux and Free Software. Watch the podcast on http://gnufunzt.de.

On stackexchange I have been most active on askubuntu.com, though I am really a Debian user and a stick-in-the-mud proponent of old-school Unix philosphy.

I started programming at a rather young age, and I am a strong advocate for Free Software.

SAP is a company providing different products, most of which have to do with database systems. Please specify, what product, or what kind of software you mean in particular.

comment Is there a Sticky Note Application similar to Windows Sticky Note?
Can you describe more in detail, i.e. what you are missing in xpad? I have no idea, what the Windows PostIts look like, and how they might feel different.

comment How to get my localhost with a different directory to my index working?
as long as the web server (user www-data) has read permissions this will not be a problem. In any case you will notice if this should become the stopper.

comment How can I get an interactive shell as another non-root user?
The reason is, that any attacker accomplishing a login as a system user, i.e. by exploiting a bug in the login program, is less likely to end up with a valid shell. So, you should leave the setting as it is in the /etc/passwd file, even if it's just for good karma. Invoking the shell directly via sudo is unrelated to this.

comment Can you install Ubuntu directly to a HDD?
Now this could be tricky... But wait. Is there a syslinux/ or isolinux/ directory on the CD? Syslinux and Isolinux are two related bootloaders, which use the same config file format but different first stages (i.e. MBR stages). In this case you could copy all files from the cd to a FAT partition on the harddrive. And then use syslinux to boot... and I don,t know how to install syslinux from windows. Ahmm... screw it, just try copying the image to a partition first, set the bootable flag for this partition and see what happens.

comment Can you install Ubuntu directly to a HDD?
Installing to the same Hard disk... hmm you would have to create an extra partition, and therefore a partition table, and i am not sure how the installer image will like that. could be that you have to overwrite a part of the images bootloader, but at this time the installer would already be in memory... crude hack, could work though. Same problem goes for installing grub. The Ubuntu installer does perform the grub installation automatically.

comment root and home are on seperate partitions, but home still uses up space on root?
hmm... run find ~/ -lname '/*' to get a list of all symlinks in your home directory, which point to the root. There might be a directory link, causing directory content to be stored on your root partition.

comment Is it ok to run with unknown video device?
While your card may generally perform better with proprietary drivers, you should always rely on the free software drivers that come with your system. Those are more stable, better integrated, and require less, if any maintenance work on your site. If your card performs satisfactory, don't start to fiddle around with drivers. If it doesn't you might want to try. And as gh403 so beautifully wrote: If it works, it works.

comment What are the differences between sudo, su, visudo, chroot, and gksu?
To be exact su and sudo allow to execute processes as another user, it doesn't have to be root. su can always be used to switch to any other user (authenticating with this users credentials). While sudo can be particularly configured to allow execution of specific programs in a specific user context by specific users. Most often though both are used to gain root privileges.
