I am a freelance computer programmer and system administrator hanging out in several Linux User Groups in and near Berlin, mostly LinuxWorks! and Nerd-Cafe. My jobs involve working for the Free Software Foundation Europe and for several places involved with the education of children.

On the side I have been involved in short movie projects and I am coauthoring a german language video podcast about GNU/Linux and Free Software. Watch the podcast on http://gnufunzt.de.

On stackexchange I have been most active on askubuntu.com, though I am really a Debian user and a stick-in-the-mud proponent of old-school Unix philosphy.

I started programming at a rather young age, and I am a strong advocate for Free Software.

OK I was beeing cynical here. Let me state for the record that I find the workflow and UI concept of both, Unity and Gnome3 pretty well designed and overall reasonable. Especially when watching non-technical users handeling those desktops. I don't care so much for some parts of the technical foundation of those two, but that's a completely different matter and urelated to the problem discussed here.

No it's not suitable for this task, Xephyr lets you start a completely new Desktop Session, inside your Session. But since Unity puts every program to fullscreen, Xephyr would also be fullscreened, which kind of limits the usefullness here.

well yeah, this obviously was the reason, since the printer setup utilities use http connections to localhost to configure the printing system, and you where redirecting all http traffic over a server in ... India... btw. are you aware of that? If not, who asked you to do this?

comment How does the Ubuntu upgrade process work?
I think all you will find on the internet about the dependency hell are complaints. Read your apt man pages, like man apt-get. I find it is often useful to use the release specifying command syntax like apt-get -t intrepid install foo/jaunty bar/oneiric etc..., just examples. Actually this makes more sense with Debian where you sometimes mix releases, under Ubuntu this is less customary. Interesting topics could also be apt-pinning and setting packages on hold.

comment Can you help diagnose why this laptop running Ubuntu has crashed and seemingly died
I believe on the Ubuntu installation CD, in the first bootmenu, probably a submenu of this, you should find a utility named memtest86 which will check if your RAM is faulty somewhere. But like Sergey I'd rather go for the HDD or SATA-controller, the latter one is unfortunately not interchangable in a Laptop.

With the described setup every Device connected to the cable interface of your computer would be routed to the internet whenever the computer itself has any kind of internet connection. From the fact that you set up and configured a DHCP server yourself I assume that you know at least basic facts about TCP/IP setup and routing.

what about maximum mount counts? A check can be mount-count based or interval based, as you said correctly the latter is not the case here.

No, the chroot mechanism is not used during the system upgrade. The upgrade is performed on the live file system. You can even watch your program menus beeing rebuilt and program icons change as they are being replaced. But the chroot mechanism is used in an original system installation, when a fresh system is "debootstrapped" into a change root environment on a newly created disk partiton.

Just for clarification... you have some cable clients attached to the network on eth0 and to those you want to provide an internet connection, which is accessed on wlan0. So the machine we are talking about functions as router.
