I am a freelance computer programmer and system administrator hanging out in several Linux User Groups in and near Berlin, mostly LinuxWorks! and Nerd-Cafe. My jobs involve working for the Free Software Foundation Europe and for several places involved with the education of children.

On the side I have been involved in short movie projects and I am coauthoring a german language video podcast about GNU/Linux and Free Software. Watch the podcast on http://gnufunzt.de.

On stackexchange I have been most active on askubuntu.com, though I am really a Debian user and a stick-in-the-mud proponent of old-school Unix philosphy.

I started programming at a rather young age, and I am a strong advocate for Free Software.

Is this in the upper right corner of your keyboard a "scroll lock" key? If so, it could also have to do with this behaviour.

It is not clear to me from your highlighting, what you have run in the terminal. You should not run run 'numlockx off', instead run numlockx off - without the "run" and without the quotation marks. ...sorry if this sounds stupid, I just want to make sure that your mistake is not there

comment Bought a new WD 1TB Elements USB3, I wanted to install Xubuntu 12.04 in it but it just won't work?
The 4k alignment thing is not an issue. Ubuntu should work well with this and even if it doesn't the disk access would only slow down. You have done well by choosing sector 2048 as the beginning of the first partition. I think we can safely exclude this as a problem source.

Considering that your question cannot be answered easily, the graphic is a good start. Though it contains some ... "deceptive marketing"... (Ubuntu One, in the core, srsly). You might want to look up the GNU Operating System in Wikipedia. Gnome isn't there because Ubunutu uses Unity as a desktop, not Gnome. Both are based on the GTK-Toolkit though and share some applications, that's why you hear Gnome mentioned sometimes. Also Gnome is common on other GNU/Linux Distributions than Ubuntu. Grub is the Bootloader which loads Linux, on this graphic you could put it into the Core section.

comment How to make users with UID under 1000 appear in LightDM?
Oh wait, I think what Achu meant was modifying the MacOS user. This would probably be the cleanest solution. Don't forget to chown all the files of the Mac-User afterwards, so they belong to the new UserID.

No you don't want to renumber the user. this would simply remove it from LightDMs display as well. What you are looking for is some parameter of the lightDM configuration in your /etc or maybe /etc/xorg directory. I don't have lightdm installed currently, so I can't tell you which one.

Oh, yes, of course /dev/sdc1 would have been correct, like in the command line call from your question. But using the UUID is better anyway, because it is independent from the order in which disks are initialized. Thanks for editing.

OK I was beeing cynical here. Let me state for the record that I find the workflow and UI concept of both, Unity and Gnome3 pretty well designed and overall reasonable. Especially when watching non-technical users handeling those desktops. I don't care so much for some parts of the technical foundation of those two, but that's a completely different matter and urelated to the problem discussed here.
