Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.10 , I have a problem with my mouse. It just suddenly stops working during an operation, and sometimes when the system is idle. This happens almost everyday. I am a newbie to Ubuntu and have just migrated from Windows XP. Do I need to install specific drivers for the mouse.

First, I recommend upgrading to 12.04. – Cumulus007 Jul 30 '12 at 18:35
Ubuntu 11.10 is not supported any more so this question risks being closed as off topic. Upgrade first and if you still have a problem let us know the exact model of mouse you have. Most mice should just work however. – Warren Hill May 31 '13 at 15:35

Are you using a mouse or a touchpad?

I had this problem too on my laptop, the touchpad randomly locked up...

go to the mouse settings-> Touchpad and than there should be a checkbox which says something about that the touchpad is getting temporarely deactivated during typing. This should prevent unwanted clicking during typing.

But for some reason it does not reactivate the touchpad...

I solved it by unchecking and after that check the box. I don't know why but for me it works...

If you have a USB mouse connected, try unplugging it.
