I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 alongside my existing XP operating system. When I startup I get a message that display is not optimal resolution and then it automatically boots into Ubuntu. Any suggestions, please?

Is there another monitor you can connect the computer to see what the message is at the computer boots up? One more thing which would help is you could press [Esc] key right after bios screen and choose winXP and see if boots up. –  viyyer Feb 4 '13 at 6:05

Try using in terminal: update-grub

Will that help? If not then google the location of Your grub config file for Your Ubuntu version and set the time to lets say a 60 seconds. If that doesn,t help either write.
