OK, think of me of a bit of newbie here as far as Ubuntu goes...

I am building up a new system out of old scrap parts, Ubuntu installed alright but having a problem 'seeing' the contents of an IDE DVD drive.

Ubuntu can physically see the drive in the'Drive Utility' and reading a few of the threads this seems to be a common problem in that Ubuntu just doesn't like IDE DVD drives

Is it possible to solve if you manually edit some secret files? I've tried doing that best I can, should I find the necessary files and copy and paste the text off the threads in without knowing what I am doing?

Shame there isn't a lil program one can d/l and zap the problem automatically! Been tearing my hair out for a few days now... ;-)

The main point of switching to Ubuntu was security/ privacy... Especially with NSA now writing code for Windows... But kind of defeats the purpose if I can't access my own files?

Please help or i am going to be bald by end of the week...

ok then...seemed quite str8 fwd to me....but to make it really simple (please note it is actually 2 (that's TWO) questions here.....

  1. How do I make IDE DVD drive 'work' properly under Ubuntu?
  2. How do I get rid of the thing down the left hand side and put it back/ normal drop down menus across top of screen as in previous releases?

hope that simplifies it down a bit for you...;-)

I did not down vote your question, but it was impossible for me to understand your question from the wall of text. – bodhi.zazen Jan 25 '12 at 0:09

Maybe you could strip all the complaining about what you don't like in 11.04 and describe what exactly isn't working with your DVD drive. – Florian Diesch Jan 25 '12 at 8:44
