In GNOME 3 the nautilus option "compact layout" is missing.
Compact layout is the function which decrease the space between icons.
I made this image that you have a better impression of this feature. The zoom level is 400% and the localisation is german.

As you can see this option is very important, when you are working with very similar images (they are from http://marsshooter.org ).
- First step: compact layout, which doesn't exist in Nautilus 3.2.x (oneiric)
- Second step: deselect "kompakte Anordnung"
- Third step: normal layout, which brakes your mouse wheel
I found the considering bug on gnome.org: 656190
I hope this function also important for you, so please rate this comment!
REMEMBER: Your mouse wheel will always love you for that :D
Here can you find the mailing-list about this feature. Removing this feature was a design decision, and should replaced by a non-existing algorithm which detect the optimal space between icons. But that's not satisfactory.
