The default text/icon color in my top panel has changed from white to a very dark grey, making my menus virtually unreadable against the black of the Ambiance theme. This includes even the login screen menu.

I used Gnome Tweak to change the theme to Adwaita, but while some text has gone light grey (e.g. Date/Time), the login menu text remains dark grey, as do most icons (e.g. dropbox, wireless, battery indicator...) in the top panel after I log in.

I tried deleting the top panel altogether but the option of deleting under Super + Alt + Right Click is blocked off. I tried running a panel from the terminal, but it came up in strange colors too, plus icons had moved around and some parts of the panel were opaque and other parts transparent. Deleting the panel wouldn't solve the basic problem anyway, as my login menu would still be very dark grey and unreadable against the default (black) Ambiance background.

I would like to keep Ambiance but I want to reset the color to default (white) again.

Can anyone help me?

Unity’s Windows Bar and Panel Opacity is controlled by Ubuntu Unity Plugin under CCSM. So to do that first install CompizConfig-Settings-Manager by following command in a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager.

Then launch CCSM. Click to go into Unity Plugin’s configuration page, in Experimental tab change the value of Panel Opacity

this will help u i got same problem 2 days before this will help me

Thanks for the reply. I have CCSM installed but I have deactivated the Unity plugin as I want to use the Gnome Classic system (with Compiz, etc). Also, its the text color that I wish to change, rather than that of the whole panel. Apologies if I was unclear. – Kobby Jan 19 at 11:59
What does Unity have to do with Gnome classic? I have the same symptom; it looked great in 11.10, but now it sucks, especially if you try to make the top panel semi-transparent; some controls insist on being gray. The clock is completely useless, as it's unreadable unless you hover the cursor over it. It's as if they want to force us to use Unity by making the alternative suck more. – Marty Fried Apr 29 at 4:52
