I successfully installed the latest version of ubuntu on my laptop which has a windows xp OS. I installed it from a USB drive. However when the comp told me to restart, it brought me back to windows automatically without asking me which OS I wanted to boot. I've tried reinstalling thinking it would work. I have checked the hard drive via windows and it's clearly been partitioned. What's wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds as if you did not install grub to the MBR. – bodhi.zazen Jan 9 '12 at 17:43

I think your grub has the issue.Ok while you're booting your system hold the SHIFT key for Grub menu and choose the Ubuntu.

Now you got small job to do that you have to change your Grub time to some 10 or 5 sec. for that easy and safe way is doing things with Grub customizer .

For that click here.

All the best.
