Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I need to choose between several operating systems, including Ubuntu, other Linux distros and Windows 7. I personally like that Linux OSs are free and open source, they are very secure and don't have problems with viruses. But a friend of mine tells that Ubuntu is not good because it doesn't have good 3D Games and the newest Photoshop will not work on this OS.

The first question: is Ubuntu the best Linux distro? A friend of mine tells that Mint is much easier to use and it's more popular. Also another friend of mine tells that Debian is much more stable and it's used by web-hosting companies.

My second question: is Windows much more user-friendly, has better fonts and well supported operating system than any Linux distro? Another point to take into account is that the best browser, the browser of my choice, is Internet Explorer 9. Is it possible to port it to Linux? Could anybody of you do it for me?

What is your advice? Thank you in advance!

This isnt really a question that fits well with AskUbuntu - its a debating question that should really be directed at UbuntuForums. – fossfreedom Jan 5 '12 at 12:47

In addition: your friend is wrong, it is not "not good", too many people like it. However-3D-gaming is difficult, most modern games are made for windows.first check whether your games work with wine using the appdb on www.winehq.org.About your two questions:you are new to Linux, try ubuntu using the live CD - no risk with that. After that decide ;-) Still I think this question is okay, he needs advice in the question "is ubuntu suitable for my needs?" – Michael K Jan 5 '12 at 13:28

We're all Ubuntu users here so we're only going to give you one answer: Try it. But anyway, I'm closing because this sort of opinion-based question is extremely subjective and rarely goes well. If you want to chat about your options UbuntuForums is probably the best place to get an opinion. – Oli Jan 5 '12 at 13:30

Photoshop will not work on any version of Linux without running in a virtual machine, if you really need photoshop, stick with Windows. I think that Ubuntu is a great distro with a great community, out there waiting to help you when something goes wrong. The interface is very streamlined, and Ubuntu has a lot of GUIs to take away the "fear of e command line" problem from beginner users. The great thing about Linux though, is that you can try a distro without installing it. Burn the distro to a CD, boot to it, and play with it for a while. I'm not telling you which to choose, make the choice yourself.

So, I guess that Photoshop is not the most needed application for me. It is much more important to have the IE 9. I can't find any decent information on how to install IE 9 to Ubuntu. Is it possible? I like this browser very much. – Armen Tseretyan Jan 5 '12 at 13:33
Anyway, thank you for response. – Armen Tseretyan Jan 5 '12 at 13:37
@ArmenTseretyan Microsoft hasn't released a version of IE that runs on platforms other than Windows in more than 10 years. While IE9 isn't a terrible browser, I'd recommend that you look at the alternatives -- you can do much better than IE9. – michaelms Jan 5 '12 at 13:39
ok, I'll try again, AvantBrowser looks pretty good and it's compatible with IE9. – Armen Tseretyan Jan 5 '12 at 13:45
You can get IE9 to work in Ubuntu - check out this link: tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Installation:Ubuntu – William Jan 5 '12 at 14:16
