I have a computer with two PCI TV cards. One is Compro (Win friendly), another is Leadtek (Linux friendly). Now, i'm trying to optimize my Ubuntu boot process and i would like to disable detection of my Compro card because it's not working on Linux, it won't work and even if it does, i don't care. Sometimes, i'm using...alterative...OS so removing Compro card from case is not an option. Is there any way to tell Linux "ignore any hardware placed THERE (appropriate PCI slot)"?

My dmesg concerning tv card detection looks like this:

I know, i won't see any speedup benefit from disabling that detection, but those lines appear before plymouth splash and i don't like it :\

To prevent a module from loading, you can blacklist it. I guess that the responsible module is called cx88xx based on the lines from your dmesg. You can verify it by checking the output of lsmod | grep cx88xx.

Blacklisting a module goes like:

  1. Create the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-cx88xx.conf (the filename was randomly chosen).
  2. Insert:

    blacklist cx88xx

  3. Update the initial ramdisk to prevent the module from loading on boot:

    sudo update-initramfs -u

  4. The next reboot should immediately show the changes.

  • I can't do that because that same module is used by another TV card, the one that WORKS in Linux :\

  • I don't know if it's possible to exclude devices from being detected. It looks like recompiling the kernel module is the only way to remove the message (source code)
