I recently installed ubuntu 11.10 on a dual boot with windows xp. it loaded at first and i logged on and set it up how i liked it. i then had to do a repair on windows xp as it had problems. now ubuntu will only let me log in as a 'guest' and wont load after putting in my password. All that happens is the top quarter of the screen goes black and myuser name@ubuntu appears. i have tried changing my password but the same thing happens....so now what?

so i tried typing 'login' into the 'black screen after myusername@ubuntu and it says 'couldnt possibly work without effective root' – wathfolk Dec 25 '11 at 12:34
Can you switch to a TTY using ctrl+alt+f1? If you do can you try to login there? – Bruno Pereira Dec 25 '11 at 12:37
