I followed these steps to use my webcam with Ubuntu running in VirtualBox.

And I installed cheese using the webcam menu.

Now when I press the cheese button, nothing happens. Where do I find log files or can verify that my webcam is detected?

BTW: I first tried to use the webcam in a windows 7 guest, but there I had some other problems as described here. From that experience I'm sure that the usb filter setting is correct and I doubt that the driver for my webcam is installed.

the command 'lsusb' in terminal will list all connected USB devices, is that all you need to verify? – Tom Brossman Dec 18 '11 at 10:26
cheese in terminal tells that it depends on 3D acceleration, which crashes my vm when I enable it. When there is no webcam program not depending on 3D, I have to solve that first. I found forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=41821 – bernd_k Dec 18 '11 at 10:36
Is this still a problem for you ? – bodhi.zazen Apr 5 at 4:02
