When I log into Ubuntu 11.10, My messaging menu shows a little arrow to the left of "Chat" but greyed out statuses. My understanding is that the little arrow means that the application is running.

If this is true, then why are the statuses greyed out? (Am I or am I not logged in to Empathy at that point?)

Having a small arrow to the left of "Chat" does mean that the application is running, however just because the application is running doesn't mean that you are automatically logged in. If the statuses are greyed out then you are not logged in.

I have a small arrow next "chat" in my messaging menu though I haven't even set up any chat accounts so it definitely can be running and you not be logged in!
