I'm using Empathy in Gnome Shell, and I cannot figure out how to open a conversation window with a contact. I've tried every action I can think of that should open a conversation window, such as:

  • double clicking on a contact's name in the contact list;
  • Right-clicking on a concatct in the contact list and selecting "Chat";
  • Right-clicking on a concatct in the notification bar (the bottom right icon bar thingy) and selecting "Open".

All of these actions seem like they should open a chat window, and in previous versions, they used to open a chat window. However, instead, they all simply add an entry for the contact to the notification bar.

Did Gnome Shell decide that conversation windows were deprecated in favor of the "Messaging Tray", as it is called on the Gnome 3 website? Is my system misconfigured? What's going on here?

Are you using 11.10? If so, I cannot duplicate this on my install. – WarriorIng64 Dec 9 '11 at 4:30
Yes, I am using 11.10. – Ryan Thompson Dec 9 '11 at 5:38
Found a bug report that describes my problem: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/830840 – Ryan Thompson Dec 9 '11 at 5:44
If that bug report describes your exact problem, then I would suggest marking yourself as affected on it and providing any additional details from your situation that the developers might find useful. However, from looking at it I would say the way you described your problem above does not exactly match the bug description; do you also have an issue with opening chat windows in Unity? – WarriorIng64 Dec 9 '11 at 5:50
I haven't checked Unity. I'll try that next. – Ryan Thompson Dec 9 '11 at 23:18
