findout why cannot install from software centre. open terminal and type

sudo apt-get update

is there any error message? if yes post it here, we will look at the problem. If not go ahead and install your software in the terminal like this (to install 'software-name')

sudo apt-get install software-name

see you get any error or not. If got any error post it here , if not try reinstalling software-center from syanptic.

uninstall and reinstall software center. I don't see any error message in your comment. Can you tell me what is the terminal output when you do 'sudo apt-get install skype' You can copy and paste the terminal output in pastebin and give the url address in this comment. –  skumara Dec 5 '11 at 8:25

Is this the first time you install skype in this system or you are reinstalling skype after skype crashed in the system? –  skumara Dec 5 '11 at 8:29

3) after it has installed type: sudo synaptic and enter your password to run the program

4) Otherwise you can also launch it from the dash.
