Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a headset, and the microphone is working perfectly without background noise in Windows, but in Ubuntu 11.10, the input has a very disturbing heavy noise.

If I low the microphone volume on unamplified, it's too low so that it doesn't record anything.

What's the problem?

A lot of Windows OEM's install have a utility tightly coupled to your sound drivers that filters noise. Perhaps you had one in Windows but no such utility in Ubuntu. Addressing your second headset, it may perhaps do that in hardware. –  hexafraction Jun 28 '12 at 19:58

Maybe the mic boost is too much? Check it in alsamixer.

no, also when I set the boost to 0 in alsamixer, the noise remains. It's interesting that if I use another headset, the noise does no longer appear. This could point to a problem of the headset mic, but why does it work perfectly in Windows on the same pc? –  manu.valentin Dec 3 '11 at 12:44

The following instructions for installing the latest ALSA packages via the DKMS .deb installer worked for me on the Acer 5520.

Oneiric 11.10
