I want to be able to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu together but, can not do it without knowing that Ubuntu is going to install onto the main section of the disk. The HDD is 750gb while the recovery partition is only 30gb.

What option did you chose? Install alongside? Do Something else? As a test try the Do Something Else option and see if the partition manager then sees your main Windows partition. You can still back out of the installation at that point. It is my understanding that the partitioner will divide the hard disk into two equal parts, create a new partition (called extended) and create two partitions (called logical) for Ubuntu inside that. The partitioner should (does?) see your hard disk as a single unit when you choose the Install Alongside option. –  grahammechanical Nov 29 '11 at 14:17
