I have Ubuntu 11.10 and I have problems with shutdown. Most of the times, it will shutdown but sometimes it will not and freeze ! I am a newbie with Ubuntu and I would like to know if there is a solution to this problem. I have also tried to hibernate but no way.

Does it show any messages? Can you press ESC during shutdown to see messages? Can you see log entries in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages which could be related to your Problem? If so, please edit your posting to add those lines. In addition, please add some hardware information about your system by editing your posting as well. Do you have hardware connected when the system hangs during shutdown (e.g. USB mobile phone, stick, hard disk) which usually is not connected? –  Michael K Nov 10 '11 at 14:39

Yeah, sounds like something not getting deleted/unmounted/sync-ed whatever. –  hbdgaf Nov 10 '11 at 15:01

+1. I have issues with complete (I mean complete) freezing on shutdown also, which is down to the FGLRX drivers (11.8). I have yet to try newer drivers. –  duffydack Nov 10 '11 at 18:28

I'm not sure why it is happening, but there is a work around that might help you until you find out what is going on. Open a terminal and type sudo restart lightdm. It should end your session and bring on the login screen. Then you could try shutting down using the button there.

Ubuntu is installed on a Asus notebook X52JK.There is no message just the ubuntu logo but the dots stand still. When it hangs, the fan speeds !Another thing I have noticed is that with no reason at all ubuntu freezes and if remove my wired mouse, it comes back... –  Stéphane Duros Nov 11 '11 at 13:20

I solve it by using "Hibernate" instead of "Shutdown". But of course this can't solve the problem fully.
