We have an HP LaserJet 1020 printer connected to a Synology NAS server in our house. So far, printing via Samba and foo2zjs has worked perfectly under all previous versions of Ubuntu we have tried on several computers.

Now, one of our computers has received a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10, and I have installed (and reinstalled several times) the printer exactly the same way as I did previously on the other computers, but now it has problems printing particularly non-ASCII characters like accented characters in Western European character sets. Furthermore, characters get typeset in incorrect positions on the paper.

Any ideas on how to remedy the problem, or even how to start to locate the cause of the problem? Printing still works perfectly on all the other computers in our house running Ubuntu, and we have not changed anything related to the NAS server or network.
