the easiest way is type the following command in terminal:

For installing jdk: sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk
For installing jre: sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre

If you want java you should look in software center.

if you want to install a java file it depends what’s in it, sometimes you can untar it and give the system right to run the file and then click on it.

You should write java on your terminal. This may give output something like this:

me@comp:~$ java
The program 'java' can be found in the following packages:
 * gcj-4.4-jre-headless
 * gcj-4.6-jre-headless
 * openjdk-6-jre-headless
 * gcj-4.5-jre-headless
 * openjdk-7-jre-headless
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>

Then you should type

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre-headless

Press enter and it would install it.
