How do I install GNOME Shell extensions?

Manage Gnome and the shell extension 

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

The GNOME extension aren't in official repository so you can use a PPA where you can download all of them;

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update

These are a set of gnome shell extension :

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme gnome-shell-extensions-dock gnome-shell-extensions-drive-menu gnome-shell-extensions-pidgin gnome-shell-extensions-system-monitor gnome-shell-extensions-weather gnome-shell-extensions-windows-navigator
  • gnome-shell-extensions-windows-navigator

This extension allows keyboard selection of windows and workspaces in the overview mode.

  • gnome-shell-extensions-weather

is a simple extension for displaying weather notifications in GNOME Shell.

  • gnome-shell-extensions-system-monitor

This extension adds a system monitor.

  • gnome-shell-extensions-pidgin

Display Pidgin chats as notifications in the Shell message tray

  • gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme

This extension adds theming support to GNOME Shell. With this extension, you can personalize the looks of GNOME Shell with themes installed in ~/.themes/ or in /usr/share/themes. For a GUI way to install/remove themes, install package gnome-tweak-tool.

  • gnome-shell-extensions-drive-menu

This extension adds status menu for accessing and unmounting removable devices.

  • Gnome-shell-extensions-dock

    shows a dock-style task switcher to the right side of the screen and is visible all the time (unlike the Dash "dock" displayed on the left that's only displayed in the "Activities" view). Right now, the dock looks almost the same as the Dash dock except it's smaller.

    Gnome Shell Dock Extension comes with very basic functionality: display a list of running applications and add/remove applications as favourites with only right click.

What are PPAs and how do I use them?

You can also add extensions without installing a PPA by downloading an extension and putting it in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions. The extension will then show up in the tweak tool which you can use to enable the extension. – user1477 Nov 4 '11 at 19:38

The GNOME website has an Extensions section set up, which is currently in its Beta phase. It promises easy installation of extensions, and management of installed ones, through a web interface.
