I've been having this very strange wireless connection problem. I have a zyxel p-660n-t1a wireless modem. I have also a dual boot machine with windows 7 together with a fresh 11.10 ubuntu install. I have no wireless connection problems with windows 7, can connect to my local wireless network and can browse the web via firefox. But here's the problem: With ubuntu, although I can get connected to my wireless network, I cannot browse the web for example. Tried pinging google.com for instance but got no response, not even the stats that say how many packets are transmitted/received.

There are two interesting things though: First, when I connect my computer directly to my modem via an ethernet cable, I can browse the web etc. Secondly, there is another wireless network out here near me which does not require authentication and when I tried browsing the web over that network I was able to do it?!

So in the end, I looked around the web for similar problems. I found some forum entries but the solutions were generally a reboot, which I tried and did not work. So as I am really having a headache here, I would most appreciate it if someone could help me figure out this problem.

BTW, I have an LG-A520 laptop with Ralink RT3090 wireless controller.

this might be of some use to you:

Further you might want to try the additional drivers feature. Wifi drivers can be a pain. I hope those links help you.

I don't really think it's a wifi driver issue, because right now I am currently connected to my university's wireless network and am able to post this comment. So thanks for reply, but I think it's a different problem. – rendekarf Oct 31 '11 at 17:26
I tried installing the driver mentioned in the second link. I blacklisted acer_wmi, although I am not convinced that was necessary in my case and added "rt3090sta" to /etc/modules. But as I expected it did not solve my problem. I'm starting to think this is some kind of weird problem between ubuntu 11.10 and my zyxel modem. Will try to get another modem and test my wireless connection again. Thanks again for the help! – rendekarf Oct 31 '11 at 22:03
