For some reason, I can boot into the Live environment just fine, but when I install Ubuntu and actually try to boot into it, I start getting problems. Apparently it has issues going into the login screen, because the entire screen is either black or gray, except for a very slim row at the top where I can see my mouse if I move it up there. However, everything else is pretty much broken. I am wondering why this is happening when I can run the Live environment just fine, and what I can do about this...?

Desktop Specs: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, ASUS Crosshair V Formula Motherboard (booting in via BIOS emulation, not UEFI), AMD Radeon HD 6950, 8GB RAM, 640GB HDD

Side note: Fedora 16 works perfectly well. I was looking into switching back to Ubuntu because of a few things in Fedora that recently bug me, but I can't do that if Ubuntu won't even work on my system.

You could try to setup an /etc/X11/xorg.conf using vesa driver, which should work. I do not know what went wrong during installation. Use Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get into a terminal, log in and sudo Xorg -configure see also wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config. Maybe Xorg tries to start up in a not supported resolution. – Michael K Oct 31 '11 at 10:01
That ended up not working at all. I tried to boot into recovery mode as well, but in there I was bombarded with a lot of different errors concerning USB that made typing commands (which ended up not working anyways) very difficult. I'm flabbergasted why there are so many issues with this, especially when Fedora (and Ubuntu in the Live environment) handle it all, no sweat. – dmaxel Nov 1 '11 at 1:33
