Possible Duplicate:
How can I configure Unity's launcher auto-hide behavior?
How do I always show the launcher (i.e. disable the auto-hide functionality)?

The sidebar in unity by default hides and getting it back means keeping your mouse on the side of the screen for 1~2 seconds for it to appear again.

To me, that's a huge delay.

I understand why they don't make it appear instantly because you accidentally keep bringing the sidebar up which is also annoying.

But, since I'm on a wide screen monitor, is there an option to tell unity to keep the sidebar always visible? (And obviously shrink the maximized windows so that they don't go under the side bar)

I dont think so, the problem in the post mentioned above is far more specific. – Dominik Oct 28 '11 at 14:39

You might wanna read this: How can I configure Unity? The option to never hide the launcher will do exactly what you need.

Thanks, I had seen that configuration, but didn't notice the option. By the way, that post is outdated and things have changed in Ubuntu 11.10, but knowing that option is in CompizConfig->unity plugin got me to eventually find it – Shahbaz Oct 28 '11 at 14:25
Thx for the acceptance :) But to your comment: Did you notice there is an answer specific for 11.10, specifically askubuntu.com/questions/29553/how-can-i-configure-unity/…, which can be clicked in the question? If there are some things not correct, you might wanna leave a comment there. – Dominik Oct 28 '11 at 14:41
Yeah I see it now. Cool, but it wasn't hard to find it when you are sure it's there ;) – Shahbaz Oct 28 '11 at 14:52
