Possible Duplicate:
How do I use the GNOME Panel in Unity?

I am fairly new to Ubuntu and have used it for the last couple of years on a PC just for surfing the net (and thats about it).

Upgraded to the latest version and the bar at the bottom of the screen has gone - can I get this back as its a nightmare without it - its that bad I might go back to Windoze!!!

My main problem is navigating between different windows - I cant anymore because I dont know what is open.

PS is there anyway I can move the launcher thing to the right of the screen because every time I go to click on the Back button on my web browser the launcher pops up and launches Desk Home ?

Cheers in advance?

Threatening to install "windoze" isn't really productive. Why on earth would I care what operating system you use? – Jo-Erlend Schinstad Oct 26 '11 at 12:58

Can we cut the OP some slack? Sure, the "if you don't make this work I won't use Linux anymore" line is tiresome, but it seems to me that in this case OP is just using Windows as a benchmark for just how frustrated they are. – Amanda Feb 8 at 20:50

This question covers exactly the same ground as earlier questions on this topic; its answers may be merged with another identical question. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

Ubuntu 11.10 uses Unity, which does not have a bottom-taskbar. If you want to know which windows are open, you can see it on the launcher on the left side. The programs that are running have one white triangle per window. You can either use the mouse to look at the launcher, or you can use the 'Super'-key.

You can switch between the running programs by pressing Alt+Tab. A list of keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures is here.

I'm sorry that you don't like the position of the launcher, here is another question that asked about this. From my experience with Unity, it feels very good once you have used it for a few days. So maybe you might give it a shot before switching to Windows :-)

+1, good answer but the desktop switcher and minimized apps changing is far less functional on the launcher than on the bottom bar... you can see how many apps are minimized but you can't see what's inside before clicking to see all the windows and you need to be very lucky (or precise) to click on the right triangle once you know what is what! I'm trying to get used to unity since some time now. The way is to use keyboard shortcuts as you linked but I don't think this is an improvement! – laurent Oct 26 '11 at 15:19

The old panel is gone and won't come back. There are many others to choose from, though, and there is a new version of the old style, known as Gnome Fallback. You can install it from here: http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/gnome-session-fallback.

There is no bottom task-bar since 11.04, Ubuntu has new shell called Unity.

And you can navigate easily using the launcher.

And you can't move the Launcher to the right, you can change how to reveal it.

See How can I configure Unity? .
