After login, desktop appears but there's no menu what can i do to get it back

which menu?, what version of ubuntu are you using? – JesusLives ii Oct 21 '11 at 21:53
It's likely somehow that the Unity plugin is not enabled in Compiz, did you make any changes recently? – Mark Rooney Oct 21 '11 at 22:24

Maybe you're missing a package; try sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-session – Cees Timmerman May 11 '12 at 9:42
