Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

When I try to open Empathy it will log in into the accounts and then shutdown automatically. I have to open empathy several times to use it and suddenly while using it, it shuts down again.

By "shutdown" I mean not the entire system but Empathy only.

Is it possible that Empathy is crashing? Try running it in a terminal and if it happens again, post the output here. –  Christopher Kyle Horton Oct 20 '11 at 15:20

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" Segmentation fault this is the output while running from the terminal –  VENKI Oct 20 '11 at 16:42

Yep, that's a crash. This should be reported as a bug on Launchpad, if it's not there already. You may want to use Apport or gdb to assist you in reporting the crash. –  Christopher Kyle Horton Oct 20 '11 at 17:26

The first thing that comes to mind for me is Pidgin. You can also try taking a look at some other questions on the topic. I'm not sure what your exact requirements are, but if none of those listed answers suit you, then you might want to consider opening a new question with the software-recommendation tag. –  Christopher Kyle Horton Dec 17 '11 at 21:33
