Possible Duplicate:
How to revert to GNOME Classic?

how can I install old gnome-2 in Ubuntu 11.10?

I'm aware of gnome-session-fallback but I don't like it: no system menu, large panel, effects are not working, and (most important) lack of configuration programs and ugly theme.

And I can't stay on 11.04 because of this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/837212 that is fixed in kernel 3.0

So I need to install Ubuntu 11.10 to use the new kernel but I want to have old gnome-2 desktop and old gnome-2 programs.

I tried to just install kernel 3 from Ubuntu ppa but VirtualBox is not working with that kernel... It's strange because it works in Ubuntu 11.10 with the same kernel.

I tried to revert to 10.04 but it feels slow for me.

I really don't have time for Unity/Gnome Shell/Gnome 3 tweaking, I just want to continue my work and have a stable system without additional headache.

Have a relook at the gnome-classic question - effects now work. Other than that the simple answer is no - no way of getting gnome 2. If you want a fantastic traditional interface, look at Xubuntu and Lubuntu - askubuntu.com/questions/58172/how-to-revert-to-gnome-classic – fossfreedom Oct 19 '11 at 10:01
Yes looks like it's the best solution I can have. – relgames Oct 19 '11 at 10:13

As far as I know there is no way to use Gnome2 in 11.10 other than compiling it yourself. I expect that to take much more time than to tweak 11.10 to fit your needs.

Did you try to install the new kernel on 11.04? That should be much easier.

Yes I tried but VirtualBox has stopped working... But it works in 11.10, that is strange. – relgames Oct 19 '11 at 10:12

Have a look here for ClassicMenu Indicator. Gives you the opportunity to add a gnome-2-like menu to the indicator area.

Well, when I have time I will try to tweak Gnome 3. But the question is: is there a way to install Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 11.10 or it's absolutelly not possible? – relgames Oct 19 '11 at 9:46

Maybe you can try Linux Mint. It's a distro based on Ubuntu but uses Gnome 2.

Yes I thought about it, but it's the same problem - I need to spend a couple of days to get used to it. I would be happy to stay on 11.04 but I need to upgrade because of the bug mentioned above. So I have a choise: upgrade to 11.10 and spend a couple of days for tweaking, or stay on 11.04 and suffer from that bug. Well, looks like I don't have much of a choise... – relgames Oct 19 '11 at 9:49
