The existing Ubuntu 11.04 system was installed using full disk encryption via dm-crypt and the alternate installer cd.
The first issue is that the 3x kernel panics at boot trying to mount /dev/mapper.
I can still boot the system using the 2.6.38-11 generic kernel.
The second issue is that both the GUI dist upgrade and the command line dist upgrade are failing with a dkpg segmentation fault on the libglib2.0 package.

The GUI will not load booting the the 2.x kernel but I can get a command prompt at a virtual terminal.
I've taken a core dump and some strace files as suggested on this server fault post
Even if I can fix the libglib2.0 segfault issue that still leaves me with the kernel panic.
Obviously the sane and most timely fix would be to backup my home dir and reinstall, but what's the fun in that? I know I'll gain valuable troubleshooting knowledge banging on this for at least a few hours.
First I'll have to learn how to analyze the coredump and strace files.
I won't even worry about the kernel panic for now, unless another ubuntu crypto-nut has run into this issue and has a quick fix.
