Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I performed new install of 11.04, all was well until I selected nVidia 1.73 driver upgrade.

Upon reboot, system goes to black screen.

I can boot into recovery mode, then select a shell, however, when I input this command:

sudo get-apt purge nvidia-current

I get this response:

W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Any help would be appreciated, as I am lost.
