Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free.

I've installed the "Lubuntu Desktop environment" from the Ubuntu Software Center, and then rebooted. The new interface asked for a username and password, but apparently wouldn't accept any combinations of usernames or passwords which worked before.

I've reinstalled Ubuntu since then, but I'm just curious about what I did wrong and what I could have done to fix things, for future reference. Thank you~

have you tried logging in with sudo and of course sudo passwd? :) –  Alvar Jan 28 '12 at 15:10
You could also try to enter in recovery mode, and try your user names there. –  Alvar Jan 28 '12 at 15:11
Since you did a re-install, we probably can't figure out what went wrong. As such, I've closed this as too localized. –  jrg Mar 11 '12 at 20:32

As far as installation/setup is concerned, Ubuntu does not accept letters in CAPS when creating a username. Your username should all be in small letters.
