Got a new Compaq B100 desktop with AMD E350 unit w/ embedded HD6310 IGP. The system is connected to a Dell monitor w/ resolution of 1680x1050. However, after installing Ubuntu 10.04 the system does not recognize the monitor and sets the resolution to 1280x1024.

By default, I did not see drivers available in the Hardware Drivers... applet.

After some research I found the proprietary drivers (v11.9) and tried to install and remove in different ways. At best, I get the installer to finish nicely and the catalyst preferences applets to appear in the System menu. However, when running the applets I get an error message saying that the drivers are not working properly and the applet terminates.

Running aticonfig from the console responds with:

aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

The thing is that earlier I installed 11.04, and there the drivers worked just fine, and I could get the max resolution!

I just performed a --uninstall=force of the drivers to clean the system. Again, I do not see the drivers in the Hardware Drivers module.

After some more play, I ended up not able to remove the Catalyst icons from the Preference menu although the uninstall script and manual step-by-step removal were performed. I ended up re-installing 10.04 from our image.

So, the question is - what can I do to get full resolution on my desktop?

[This system will go to a customer, so we decided to remain with the 10.04 LTS to ensure the long term support for this version. This is why I can't install the 11.XX system to have working Catalyst drivers.]
