As the title states, I'm looking for some cool things to do with an Ubuntu home server. The current plan is to use it for file storage and backups, streaming music / movies to other machines on the network, as well as being a simplified and secured box to ssh into (and resultantly the rest of my network, if I can secure it to my liking.)

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated, and I realize that this question is slightly subjective but I think that the information will be helpful for myself and others with the same question.

even for personal use I allways like to run a linux or windows Virtual Machine on the home server to continue work from any computer.

I think you allready know this but you can also use it to download torrents.

An IRC Relay server will alow you to stay loggedin on irc at all times, this way you'll see what you've missed when you were gone.

Use it as an internet gateway, this can be usefull for filtering website and stuff..

a bitcoin server is also very fun thing to do

providing your extra cycles to folding @home and/or seti @home is also a nice idea if it's not constantly in use

If your connection allows for it, you can also host your own mailserver and website
