Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

This isn't so much a question as a challenge.

I've just been looking at developer.ubuntu.com and I'm very impressed with the effort to try to get developers to write apps for Ubuntu. However, I'm also surprised that they would leave prospective developers at the "mercy" of the CLI. Doesn't seems as professional as other OS DTKs. Why not make the right choice the easy choice?

So here's the question/challenge:

Is there anyone willing to take the challenge to make a simple GUI for Quickly using Quickly and PyGTK and publish it under GPL3?

I suspect that we would get more developers interested in taking the plunge if they can just get on with the business of writing their code.

I'm personally of the opinion that you can lead a horse to water but you can't force it to drink, even if you do cobble together a nice IDE that, erm, helps it drink. Got lost in my metaphors there. Typing a few words to manage everything with Quickly should be help enough or you end up with a developer who is of no use to anybody, let alone themselves... The first step to a real solution here has to be an omnipotent IDE for Python. Integrating Quickly into that would take minutes. – Oli Oct 11 '11 at 14:09
But all that, and my opinion are by-the-by. This is not a question that we can answer on the site (it's more of a suggestion and it has no answer) so I'm going to close it. If you want to pursue the idea, UbuntuForums or the Brainstorm site might be a good step... Or talk to the PyDev (an IDE based on Eclipse) people as they might be able to do what you want. – Oli Oct 11 '11 at 14:13
