Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free.

On Ubuntu 11.04 with unity, super + D shortcut should minimise all windows and show desktop. This works with few windows, but as number of opened windows raises, the slower it gets, and sometimes it fails to minimise all of them.

Does this happens to you? It's really annoying.

Is there any opened bug or workaround?

mine is fast :) how many windows are open? –  Snicksie Oct 5 '11 at 11:09
10-15. It can stuck computer for a few seconds, but the biggest problem is that it actually does not work in many cases, minimises just few windows and the rest of them stay on the screen. –  umpirsky Oct 5 '11 at 11:36
with around 20 windows, mine has the same problem :) –  Snicksie Oct 5 '11 at 15:04
I told you. This is a bug. Don't know how to search for it in lauchpad. –  umpirsky Oct 6 '11 at 6:19
This question should instead be filed as a bug report, and as such is off-topic, thanks! Instructions here. –  Bruno Pereira Feb 4 '12 at 22:05

I upgraded to 11.10 pretty much as soon as it went live, and this happens to me too -- 'WinKey D' ('Super D'?) does show me the desktop but it works "imperfectly", e.g. some windows remain.

I've found a workaround for now: Press 'WinKey D D', i.e. hold down the WinKey and then press D twice. For some reason this is much more reliable at showing the desktop.

I wonder if this works for anyone else -- it's such quirky behavior. I wonder if it's because of the new "show numbers on the launcher when WinKey is held down" feature in 11.10's Unity.

I'm encountering this behaviour/bug as well. Read my bug report on launchpad:

The problem is that the Show Desktop button (or key combination) acts like a simple toggle. One click: Desktop, second click: unminimize all windows, etc ... even more: odd clicks: Show Desktop. even clicks: show all windows....

So that means if you click on Show Desktop for the first time, it will minimize everything. Then you open some new windows. Clicking on Show Desktop again should normally minimize the newly opened windows, but instead it toggles to unminimize everything, since it's the second click. Which is not so smart imo. Gnome 2 (Ubuntu 10.10) is smarter in Show Desktop. It detects any newly active window and the Show Desktop toggle resets itself, so that the next time you click it, it will minimize everything again.

If you would like to see this fixed, indicate that the bug affects you on launchpad. :)

Not the same issue and definitely not the same system. –  Bruno Pereira Feb 4 '12 at 22:08
