I bought a 1TB external USB SSD (Shadow). I want to copy files from an old disk and use it with Ubuntu 15.04 and Windows 7 (so NTFS). But it won't automount. The internal drive is SSD as well and works fine.

  • OK, main problem was that the disc did not like the power it was getting from the USB. With a powered USB hub I was able to format and get it running on Windows 7.

First, if the drive is not shown in fdisk, make sure it is getting enough power,if bus powered. Second, do NOT bother to format in Windows 7. Ubuntu 15 cannot properly recognize NTFS or exFAT drives formatted by Windows 7, at least the 1T SSD I have. And those were the only two choices. Instead, format to NTFS in Ubuntu. I used fdisk to create a simple primary partition, and then used mkfs.ntfs to format the drive. The resulting drive will mount on Ubuntu and on Windows 7! Nobody thought to suggest doing it in reverse, I guess because they were thinking that it should work forward. Thanks!

You can write notification specific about ssd cannot mount.

I think you can fix with:

sudo ntfsfix /dev/<device name(this is disk ssd of you)>

  • You can check device name with "fdisk -l". This is command show all disk of you, you will find disk required

  • Still will not mount:sudo mount -t hpfs /dev/sdc1 /media/ssd mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so. Works perfectly on Windows 7.

  • I reformatted the drive in Windows 7 as exfat. But Ubuntu 15 doesn't work with exfat either. I installed the exfat-fuse and exfat-utils, and I get: sudo mount -t exfat /dev/sdc1 /media/ssd FUSE exfat 1.1.0 ERROR: exFAT file system is not found.
